'This is not an intent to renege on our treaties and agreements with our established allies,' says Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella about President Duterte's desire for a 'separation' from the US

BEIJING, China – The Palace clarified that the Philippine government has no intention of withdrawing or backtracking on treaties and agreements with its traditional allies after President Rodrigo Duterte declared his “separation” from the United States.

“This is not an intent to renege on our treaties and agreements with our established allies,” said Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella in a statement sent on Friday, October 21.

Duterte’s “separation” from US should be interpreted as an “assertion” that the Philippines is an “independent and sovereign nation now finding common ground with friendly neighbors with shared aspirations.”

Similar to a statement by Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr, Abella said Duterte was merely repeating his declared intention to carve out an “independent foreign policy.”

Like Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto Pernia, Abella said Duterte only meant to “rebalance economic and military relations with our Asian neighbors.” – Rappler.com
