MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – A Sokol chopper of the Philippine Air Force crashed in Palawan on Tuesday, November 8, injuring Mimaropa police regional director Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor and 3 others.

Mayor, a former police spokesperson, and 3 other passengers were brought to the hospital for “minor injuries,” according to the military.

Air Force Sokol 926, carrying 13 passengers, was doing a reconnaissance flight in prepation for the November 10 ASEAN Chief of Justices Conference when it “experienced a mechanical problem and crash landed” in Sitio Sabang of barangay Cabayugan,” said Cherryl Tindog, spokespreson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Command.

The pilots were attempting an emergency landing when the chopper crashed.

The chopper was also carrying Chief Superintendent Camilo Cascolan, police director for operations.

It’s the not the first time that a Sokol chopper figured in an accident.

Armed Forces chief General Ricardo Visaya was the commander of the 4th Infantry Division when his chopper crashed in Marawi in southern Mindanao in 2014. The Sokol crashed back then due to sudden loss of engine power. – Rappler.com
