NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – Thirty-one students were rushed to a hospital due to food poisoning in Talisay City on Monday, November 28.

Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, Negros Occidental provincial health officer, said 20 pupils were admitted to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City while the others were treated as outpatients.

Talisay City Mayor Neil Lizares said the pupils, aged 12 years old and below, were attending a Children’s Day activity at the public plaza. Around 3,000 students, accompanied by their parents, attended the whole day event.

Lizares said the victims ate hotdogs with mayonnaise. But he added that the cause of the food poisoning is still being investigated by the city’s health department.

Tumimbang said the victims vomited and experienced nausea. Health officials are still awaiting the results of laboratory tests on the patients.

The mayor said the city government has extended P1,500 financial assistance to each of the victims’ families.

The city government will also shoulder their medicine and hospital bills, Lizares added.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Health Office reminded the public to be careful in preparing and cooking food especially this coming Christmas season. – Rappler.com
