Isabela town mayor killed in car accident
Palanan Mayor Rodolfo Bernardo Jr is proclaimed dead on arrival at the hospital while 3 of his companions are hurt

CAGAYAN, Philippines – The mayor of Palanan town in Isabela province died in a car accident late Thursday evening, December 15, in Santiago City.

Palanan Mayor Rodolfo Bernardo Jr was proclaimed dead on arrival at a local hospital, while 3 others, including the driver, were hurt.

In a report, Superintendent Genato Birung, head of the Traffic Management Group of the Santiago City police, said Bernardo’s group was on the Maharlika Highway when the driver, Rommel Alvarez, lost control of the wheel.

Birung said Alvarez reportedly overtook another vehicle, not noticing a hole on a part of the road which was under repair. Alvarez later said that he did not notice the hole as there were no signboards to warn motorists of the ongoing road repair.

The  Toyota Fortuner tumbled up to more than 5 meters before it crashed into an irrigation canal, police said.

With Bernardo and Alvarez were Engineers Emerson Velarde and Melito Casasola, officials of Divilacan and Palanan towns, respectively.

The group was heading home to Cauayan City after attending an event of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in Manila. – Rappler.com
