MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has started building bunkhouses amounting to P42-M in 7 towns in the Davao region that were hit by Typhoon “Pablo.”

DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman said that Pablo destroyed at least 40,000 houses in Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley. The worst hit are the towns of New Bataan, Compostela, Montevista, Monkayo in Compostela Valley; and Boston, Cateel and Baganga in Davao Oriental.

As of Monday, December 10, Soliman said there are 19,176 totally damaged and 26,880 partially damaged houses in Region XI.

“The bunkhouses will be built through the cash-for-work program of the DSWD. Family-beneficiaries will be involved in the construction of their houses so that they will have additional income for their families. Each worker will receive P218 a day for the program,” Soliman said.

The DSWD and local government units are now identifying permanent relocation sites for those left homeless by the typhoon. – Rappler.com
