NPA observes 29-day ceasefire in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The underground National Democratic Front (NDF) in Mindanao has declared a unilateral ceasefire to ensure “unhampered and speedy delivery of relief services” in towns affected by Typhoon Pablo, a senior communist leader said.

Jorge “Ka Oris” Madlos, spokesperson of NDF-Mindanao, said the 29-day ceasefire officially started on December 5 and will end on January 3.

“All units of the New People’s Army who are covered by the ceasefire are ordered not to launch tactical offensives,” Madlos said.

Madlos also appealed to state security forces not to use relief operations as cover in attacking NPA units in the area. “We are urging the AFP-PNP-CAFGU not to use search and rescue operations and relief operations as front for their attacks against NPA units and the communities. If attacked, the NPA has the right to defend their units and the people in the villages,” Madlos said.

Maj Gen Ariel Bernardo, commander of the 10th Infantry Division, said the military welcomes anyone who wishes to extend help to residents and communities affected by the typhoon. – Rappler.com
