MANILA, Philippines - Over a century ago, national hero Dr. Jose Rizal was executed in what was then known as Bagumbayan (now Luneta park).
Now, 116 years later, the nation commemorates the memory of the great man whose martyrdom ignited the Philippine revolution against Spain.

President Aquino led the wreath laying ceremony at the Rizal National Monument in Rizal Park, Manila. He was assisted by Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Jessie Dellosa and National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) chairperson Dr. Maria Serena Diokno.
The Rizal monument, which stands near the place where the national hero was executed, also contains Rizal's remains.
