MANILA, Philippines - Stephanie Nicole Ella, the 7-year-old girl hit by a stray bullet on New Year’s Eve, was laid to rest Saturday in a cemetery in Norzagaray, Bulacan.
Radio station dzBB reported that a convoy bearing Ella’s remains arrived at the cemetery at noontime.
Her death on January 2 sparked debate and discussions on gun control, even as her family sought swift government action to prevent a recurrence of the incident.
Four men were put under police custody but all of them denied shooting the bullet that killed Ella.
Every year, the government issues warnings before New Year’s Eve against indiscriminate shooting as a form of welcoming the New Year. In 2012, there were at least 29 injuries traced to the shooting of firearms.
Ella’s classmates, teachers and relatives grieved on the eve of her burial. They sent one message to government authorities: justice for Nicole. – Rappler.com
