GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines - Two gunmen were killed, including their victim, while 3 were injured in a shooting incident on Saturday, January 12.
The victim, Moner Buday, was driving a pick-up truck along the stretch of San Pedro extension in Bgy Lagao in General Santos City when two gunmen on motorcycles shot and injured him using a caliber .45 pistol at about 1:00 pm, Saturday, police said.
Buday, was a 33-year-old quarry worker. One of his attackers was identified as Jimmy Bagaforo, who had just been released from prison. The other suspect remained unknown.
The police said Buday managed to chase the suspects before his truck ran over them, killing the attackers and wounding 3 bystanders when the vehicle hit a food stall near Leon Lido St in GenSan.
"We heard gunshots before the truck accident. As we were helping the wounded bystanders, we were surprised to see a caliber .45 pistol on the ground," a witness said in Filipino.
Police have started investigating the motive of the shooters.
The incident erupted a day before the poll gun ban, which coincides with the start of the election period from January 13 to June 12.
It was also the day President Benigno Aquino III reported a decline in crimes nationwide.
A series of gun-related violence had been reported in the first few weeks of 2013, igniting public indignation and reopening the debate on gun control policies.
As the election period begins, local government units have been instructed to intensify their drive against loose firearms. Authorities believe most of the guns used in committing crimes are unregistered firearms which number nearly 600,000. - Rappler.com
