Espina patriarch of Biliran province dies

MANILA, Philippines - The patriarch of the Espina political clan - Gerardo "Gerry" Sabinay Espina Sr - of Billiran province in Eastern Visayas passed away Wednesday, February 6.

Espina succumbed to pneumonia. He was 77.

In a statement released Wednesday, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr said: "We join the good people of Biliran in mourning over the passing of their beloved leader, former Congressman Gerardo Espina. Gerry was a dear friend and colleague. He was a scholar, outstanding legislator, a learned professor, a gifted writer and singer."

Espina is a former member of the House of Representatives. His son Rogelio is now occupying the position. His other son and namesake "Gerry Boy" is the incumbent governor of Biliran. He is seeking re-election.
