HIGH ALERT. Sabah's east coast is now on alert following a standoff that reportedly led to 3 deaths.

MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino gunman was shot dead in another encounter with Malaysian security forces in Kampung Tanduo on Wednesday, March 6, according to Malaysian police.

“At 6:45 am, there were shots fired at our security forces and we returned fire and one of the enemies was shot… We believe he is killed,” Tan Sri Ismail Omar, Inspector General of the Police in Lahad Datu, told media in a briefing.

Omar said the Filipinos were moving around to escape detection of the authorities, Malaysia’s The Star reported.

This comes as Malaysian forces continued searching for the armed Filipinos who apparently escaped Tuesday’s (March 5) assault, in an attempt to end a 3-week standoff in the disputed region.

Malaysia launched an attack on the group, estimated to number between 100 to 300, using air force jets and hundreds of soldiers.

As of last count, 27 people were killed – 19 Filipino gunmen and 8 Malaysian policemen.

Prime Minister Najib Razak had declared the operation was “weeding out” the holed-up followers of a self-styled Muslim sultan from the Philippines, who had come to assert a long-dormant claim to the Malaysian state of Sabah. – Rappler.com, with the Agence France-Presse
