TAGUIG, Philippines – Two days before polls open, senatorial hopeful Alan Peter Cayetano urged Filipinos to support Team PNoy’s slate except for one candidate.
“If you want, you can drop one,” said Cayetano in Tagalog at the May 11 miting de avance for his wife Lani Cayetano – who is running for a second term as Taguig City Mayor. “That could be me,” he added.
He told the crowd he wanted them to make room on their ballots for preacher Eddie Villanueva who is running under the Bangon Pilipinas party.
Though there is an inherent assumption that Team PNoy bets will support each other, Cayetano had a recent spat with one member of the team – Senator Loren Legarda.
Legarda has hinted that Cayetano is behind a smear campaign against her. Legarda currently leads political polls and pulling her down a few ranks could put the coveted top spot up for grabs. Seizing the leading position is thought to lead to helpful political endorsements down the line.
Cayetano didn’t mention Legarda. Instead he singled out three Team PNoy candidates he said needed extra support.
Risa Hontiveros, Jun Magsayay and Jamby Madrigal need more votes he explained. The 3 have struggled to enter the so-called Magic 12.
Cayetano seemed confident of his political fate in the election and future races.
He left the crowd with another ambiguous call to action, “Don’t you want Philippines to have a president who is from Taguig?” – Rappler.com/with reports by Keith Mariano
