Supreme Court (SC) spokesman Theodore Te confirmed the news in a text message and said Gutierrez “became well known for his adherence to civil liberties” during his time at the SC.

Te said Gutirrez had been in and out of the hospital for the last two years and had been in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) for the past 3 weeks.  

His remains will lie in state at Sanctuarium along Araneta Avenue in Quezon City until Friday, June 14. After this, his remains will be brought to Pampanga.  

Before joining the Supreme Court, Gutierrez worked with the Offfice of the Solicitor General.

In 1993, Gutierrez became controversial after he allegedly faked authorship of a decision in favor of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company.
