MANILA, Philippines – It was a beach trip gone terribly wrong.

A Filipino based in the United States was killed after a shark attacked him in Diego Garcia island off the British Indian Ocean Territory.

According to a report by SunStar, 33-year-old Fernando Licay was attacked “moments after he went into the water.”

His friends, who were with him for the beach outing, tried to shake off the shark from Licay’s right leg but the animal would not budge.

The 33-year-old Cagayanon was rushed to the island’s medical facility but doctors were not able to revive him. SunStar reported that Licay died due to excessive blood loss.

His body was scheduled to be brought back home last Thursday, July 18, after it was embalmed in Singapore.

Licay was supposed to return to the Philippines in December, SunStar said, in time for a high school class reunion.

According to a report on ABS-CBN, more than one shark may have attacked Licay, who reportedly worked for a US Navy contractor. -Rappler.com
