Reynaldo Agcopra Gundaya alyas Ka Tarik led the April 20 ambush, which left then Mayor Ruthie Guingona, 70, injured and two of her aides killed

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Intelligence operators arrested around midnight of Sunday, August 11, a suspected New People’s Army (NPA) member who led the ambush on then Gingoog City Mayor Ruthie Guingona during the campaign period.

Reynaldo Agcopra Gundaya alyas Ka Tarik had been wanted for leading the April 20 ambush which left the 70-year-old Guingona injured and two of her aides killed, according to Maj Leo Bongosia, spokesman of the military’s 4th Infantry Division.

Guingona is the wife of former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr and mother of Sen TG Guingona. Her daughter Marie has since succeeded her as mayor of Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental.

The government, even a  Leftist leader, condemned the attack. It led the NPA to apologize for its “self-defense” against Guingona’s security group.

Gundaya was arrested by police agents in Sitio San Roque, Barangay Aposkahoy, in Claveria town, also in Misamis Oriental.

“The arrest is an accomplishment to PNP specially since they were the ones [given] this huge task [to capture] the perpetrators, likewise for the AFP and 4ID that greatly contributed to this arrest,” Bongosia said.

Gundaya is under the custody of PNP Region 10. – Rappler.com
