BASILAN, Philippines – At least 5 people died and one remained missing on Tuesday, October 8, following flash floods in the province.

The 5 dead were all from the city of Lamitan, authorities said.

The floods caused by days of heavy rain since Friday, October 4, have dislocated 253 families in 5 barangays in the capital city of Isabela. A total of 72 houses were damaged as well, local officials said.

Residents who need to go to Zamboanga and nearby islands also remained stranded since boats and ferries were still not allowed to leave on Tuesday.

Neighboring Zamboanga City was also hit by severe flooding, making the evacuees’ situation tougher. At least 100,000 residents are still staying in evacuation centers following the 3-week bloody siege by members of the Moro National Liberation Front.

Severe flooding in the city has affected at least 6 barangays, forcing Mayor Isabelle Climaco to suspend classes and work in government offices on Tuesday.

As of Tuesday morning, at least 14,335 families or 62,226 people from the city and nearby areas have been affected by the flooding, the Department of Social Welfare and Development reported.

Affected people came from the 101 barangays, 10 municipalities, 10 cities in the 7 provinces of Regions VI, VII, IX, X and XII. – Rappler.com
