MANILA, Philiipines – In choosing a romantic interest, ask a Filipino if he or she would pick one who has a sense of humor or one who has good looks. The Pinoy will choose somebody who makes him or her laugh, hands down.
A survey released by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) in time for Valentine’s Day reveals that almost all Filipino adults – 90% – prefer a person with a good sense of humor even if he or she is unattractive.
The survey was conducted nationwide in December, but the results were released Wednesday evening, February 12. SWS conducts relationship-related surveys every year.
For this survey, SWS asked repondents to choose between two options:
- “Isang lalaki/babae na pangit pero napapatawa ka o may sense of humor (A man/woman who is ugly/unattractive but can make you laugh or has sense of humor)”
- “Isang lalaki/babae na gwapo/maganda pero walang sense of humor (A man/woman who is good-looking but has no sense of humor)”
The results are consistent in all parts of the country, across civil statuses, educational attainments, economic classes, and genders: humor wins.
The director of the University of the Philippines Population Institute, Josefina Natividad, proffered an explanation: “It’s more interesting to be with someone who has a good personality because good looks will fade over time.”
A total of 91% of respondents in rural areas and 89% in urban areas chose good sense of humor more than looks.
More women prefer humor over looks, with 94% of women respondents prefering funny guys over the handsome ones.
Among males, 86% choose funny girls over pretty women.
What the single and educated prefer
SWS reveals that percentages of those choosing good humor among the single and educated are lower compared to the national percentage.
The percentage of preferring humorous guys and girls is lower for those with higher educational attainment.
Also, the percentage of choosing funny males and females are lower among the single respondents.
Meanwhile, the percentage is also lower among male respondents who are in higher income class compared to the national average.
The survey was conducted on December 11 to 16 last year among 1,550 respondents. It has sampling error margins of ±2.5% for national percentages, ±4% for the Visayas, and ±6% for Metro Manila, Luzon, and Mindanao. – with a report from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
