The results of an SWS survey are consistent in all parts of the country, across civil statuses, educational attainments, economic classes, and genders

MANILA, Philiipines – In choosing a romantic interest, ask a Filipino if he or she would pick one who has a sense of humor or one who has good looks. The Pinoy will choose somebody who makes him or her laugh, hands down.

A survey released by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) in time for Valentine’s Day reveals that almost all Filipino adults – 90% – prefer a person with a good sense of humor even if he or she is unattractive.

The survey was conducted nationwide in December, but the results were released Wednesday evening, February 12. SWS conducts relationship-related surveys every year.

For this survey, SWS asked repondents to choose between two options:

  • Isang lalaki/babae na pangit pero napapatawa ka o may sense of humor (A man/woman who is ugly/unattractive but can make you laugh or has sense of humor)”
  • Isang lalaki/babae na gwapo/maganda pero walang sense of humor (A man/woman who is good-looking but has no sense of humor)”

The results are consistent in all parts of the country, across civil statuses, educational attainments, economic classes, and genders: humor wins.

The director of the University of the Philippines Population Institute, Josefina Natividad, proffered an explanation: “It’s more interesting to be with someone who has a good personality because good looks will fade over time.”
