MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman campus has a new chancellor.

Dr Michael Tan, dean of the UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), was chosen as the next Diliman chancellor during a Board of Regents (BOR) meeting on Thursday, February 27.

UP Vice President for Public Affairs Prospero De Vera confirmed this to Rappler right after the BOR meeting.

A list of nominees was released last January 20, including incumbent chancellor Caesar Saloma and 4 others. (READ: UP Diliman to choose next chancellor from 6 nominees)

Seven regents voted for Tan, two voted for Saloma, while one voted for Dr Sylvia Claudo, Director of the Center for Women’s Studies & Professor at the UP College of Social Work and Community Development, reported the Philippine Collegian, UP Diliman’s official student newspaper.

Saloma’s 3-year term will end on March 1, 2014.

Among the qualifications for chancellor is the “commitment to academic freedom and the values and ideals” that the state university is known for.

Nominees presented their vision papers to the Diliman community. They were also interviewed by a search committee that submitted their report to the BOR – the highest policy-making body of the university.

Tan will also serve as chancellor for 3 years from March 1, 2014 to Feb 28, 2017. – Rappler.com
