MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned motorists about a closed Quezon City road on Friday, March 28, because of a huge event by the religious group Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).

Citing information from Barangay Commonwealth, the MMDA said the eastbound side of Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City will be closed on Friday.

The road closure will run from 12:01 am to 10 pm to accommodate the INC’s Lingap-Pamamahayag, an evangelical mission.

Up to 100,000 participants will attend the event that begins at 4 pm on Friday, the INC-run Eagle News reported.

Commonwealth is a main road in Quezon City, and is usually less congested than others. March 28 is a payday, however, when crowds usually flock to malls and pack the roads. For a number of Metro Manila schools, it is also graduation day.

The anti-graft court Sandiganbayan, which is located along Commonwealth, decided to cancel work because of the event.

For affected motorists, the MMDA prescribed the following traffic re-routing scheme:

1. Northbound (from Philcoa to Fairview or San Mateo)

  • From Philcoa to Fairview: The entry point of counterflow is at the island breaker in front of Meralco Commonwealth. Take the inner lane (2 or 3 lanes) of the westside of Commonwealth Avenue going to Fairview. The end and exit point of counterflow is at the island breaker in front of Don Fabian Street. Likewise, turn right at IBP Road going to Commonwealth Avenue.

  • From Philcoa to San Mateo: vehicle flow – as is

  • From Philcoa to Bagong Silangan: vehicle flow – as is

  • From Philcoa to Payatas: Turn right at IBP Road, then right at Payatas Road

2. Southbound (from Fairview to Philcoa or San Mateo)

  • From Fairview to Philcoa: Occupy the outer lanes (2 or 3 lanes) from the exit point of counterflow at the U-turn slot in front of Don Fabian Street.

  • From Fairview to San Mateo: Take the U-turn slot in front of St. Peter Church, then turn left at the IBP Road

3. From Bagong Silangan to Fairview or Philcoa

  • From Bagong Silangan to Philcoa: Turn left at the IBP Road going to underpass en route to Commonwealth Avenue

  • From Bagong Silangan to Fairview: Turn right at the IBP Road going to Litex-Commonwealth Avenue

4. From Payatas to Fairview or Philcoa or San Mateo

  • From Payatas to Fairview: Turn right at Commonwealth Avenue

  • From Payatas to Philcoa: Turn left at IBP Road to underpass en route to Commonwealth Avenue

  • From Payatas to San Mateo: Turn left at IBP Road then turn left at San Mateo Road

The INC also held a Lingap-Pamamahayag in Quezon City on Dec 13, 2013. The INC said up to 50,000 people flocked to the event at the Quezon Memorial Circle, which is 10 minutes away from the Sandiganbayan-Litex area on normal days.

The event – which ran from 1 pm to 6 pm, shorter than the upcoming activity – caused a massive traffic jam. It forced many commuters to walk.

On Oct 14, 2013, the INC held a medical mission in Manila that also forced courts to cancel work. Local governments also suspended classes in the entire National Capital Region for the event held in Manila alone. – Rappler.com
