MANILA, Philippines – Saint Louis University in Baguio will adopt the August to July school calendar, effective next school year.

SLU President Reverend Jessie Hechanova announced in a statement that the school’s Board of Trustees decided to adopt the new school calendar in all year levels including elementary and high school. They have already informed the Department of Education and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of their decision.

The decision, made last March 22, was in keeping with the university’s “general strategy to internationalize SLU’s programs, which is in keeping with the ASEAN Integration by 2015.”

The move also allows SLU to participate in student exchange programs with other higher education institutions (HEIs) in Southeast Asian countries.

The school is among 12 other HEIs in the Philippines chosen to be part of the ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Program which begins in school year 2014 to 2015. The program also makes it easier for SLU graduates to find work in other ASEAN nations, wrote Hechanova.

The shift is not just for the students but for SLU’s teachers as well.

“Faculty and researchers will become more globally competent to participate in conferences, exchange programs, and other opportunities that can enhance their professional expertise and skills,” added Hechanova.

SLU is just one of other Philippine universities that have decided to shift their school calendar in preparation of ASEAN integration. All constituent units of the University of the Philippines system are adopting the new calendar system for school year 2014 to 2015. Ateneo de Manila University has decided to do the same in 2015.

But Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson Patricia Licuanan cautioned schools to make the change only after proper consultation and solid study saying the shift may not be to the benefit of all. – Rappler.com
