Domeng storm surge warning in 6 provinces
(UPDATED) Coastal areas in at least 6 provinces are being advised to prepare for possible storm surges and high tides

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) The government issued on Tuesday, April 8, storm surge warnings for coastal areas in at least 6 provinces in the path of Tropical Depression Domeng (Peipah).

In a Project Noah blog post, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) listed coastal areas in the Visayas and Mindanao that could experience storm surges of 1.31 feet or 0.4 meters above the tidal level. (INFOGRAPHIC: Storm Surge 101: Are you at risk? Are you prepared for it?)

Earlier reports said the sea level would rise to a total height of two (2) meters, with the storm surge and the high tide. But Project Noah Executive Director Mahar Lagmay clarified that this would not be the case.

“The high tide level is still at sea level. Only the storm surge will spill over land. The storm surge will not reach 2 meters. Total water levels above the normal will only be the predicted height of the storm surge,” Lagmay told Rappler on April 7.

Government scientists adjusted the forecast model because Domeng was downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression.

The earlier advisory issued warnings that storm surge and tide could hike the water level to at least 2 meters in Leyte, Biliran, Cebu, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental. But as of 12 pm, April 8, the following provinces were given storm surge warnings: Leyte, Samar, Surigao del Sur, Cebu, Negros Oriental, Biliran.

Project Noah’s list is a model run with 4,884 stations from specified localities with storm surge. The table below shows localities with 0.5 meters storm surge height and above. A tide station is used to measure water levels, and provide meteorological and current observations.
