MANILA, Philippines (Updated) – Praises poured in from newly-crowned WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao’s colleagues in government as the boxer-politician won his comeback fight versus Timothy Bradley Sunday, April 13.

Malacañang said Pacquiao, who is also the represenatative of the province of Sarangani in Congress, can expect a red-carpet welcome when he comes back to the country.

“We join the Filipino nation in celebrating the magnificent triumph of our national treasure in global sports, Congressman Manny Pacquiao,” Palace Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr said in a statement.

“He embodies the world-class qualities of the Filipino in many competitive fields.  We can hold our heads up high by dint of our industry, hard work and courage,” Coloma added.

Vice President Jejomar Binay said the “people’s champ” once again “showcased the Filipino’s heart and determination to overcome challenges.”

“Manny will always be the people’s champion. He inspires all of us to push ourselves to greater heights, to always believe in ourselves and in the Almighty, and see the limitless possibilities that await us. His victory over Timothy Bradley is certainly a victory to be cherished by all Filipinos.

The entire country is celebrating the victory of the “nation’s pride,” Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr said.

“Manny has once again shown us that focusing on discipline and determination makes no battle insurmountable. At 35, his victory over a much younger Bradley at 30 – who was said to have been even better trained now than in their previous fight – has shown the world that he continues to be the pound-for-pound King of Boxing,” Belmonte said.

Sen Sonny Angara, who was Pacquiao’s colleague in the House of Representatives in the 15th Congress, said Pacquiao vindicated himself with his latest win.

“Indeed, a resounding victory for the 100 million Filipinos. We are undoubtedly back in the world boxing map, and Cong. Manny did not just reclaim his crown, but the respect and admiration of the world. A job well done. With hardwork and determination, nothing is really impossible to conquer and accomplish. Congratulations to my former colleague. Mabuhay ka!”

Some of his fellow lawmakers both in the lower and upper houses took to Twitter to extend their congratulations.

As is customary during Pacquiao’s fights, some lawmakers organized free viewing parties at their local covered courts.

Pacquiao, once again, gave a reason for Filipinos to be proud. But who is happiest of them all? Ifugao Rep Teddy Brawner Baguilat Jr offers a guess.

Pacquiao faced tax woes in November 2012 upon his return to the country after his victory against American boxer Brandon Rios. Tax bureau chief Kim Henares ordered his accounts frozen due to an alleged P2.2-billion tax liability – a move then Pacquiao slammed as harassment.
