On a scale of 1 to 10, terror threats are just 3 – Duterte
Still, Davao City responds with the highest form of security measures, the mayor says. ‘If you will fart, we will immediately know it’

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – After placing the city on alert based on President Benigno Aquino III’s warning of suspected terror activities in Mindanao, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte tried to downplay the threats.

On a scale of 1 to 10 – with 10 as the highest – the danger posed by the terror threats is only at 3, the mayor said on Sunday, June 29.

Regardless of how grave the threats are, however, Davao City’s is always the same: putting in place the highest form of security measures.

“Our response for it is the same with our response if it’s a 10,” Duterte said.  “If you will fart, we will immediately know it.”

Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II flew in on Sunday afternoon to be briefed by Duterte and the local police on their security measures, and to know what assistance the national government could provide.

Roxas said he was very satisfied with the security response made by the local government and the police.

More checkpoints have been manned, and CCTVs have been installed in public places since President Aquino called Duterte to warn of unnamed terror groups targeting the cities of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Koronadal, and Kidapawan.

About 1,400 cops, 350 soldiers trained on anti-terror work, and hundreds of barangay volunteers have been mobilized and deployed around the city as well.

“We are doing everything humanly possible [to prepare],” Duterte said.

Roxas disclosed that one of the issues raised by Davao City was its lack of available K-9 assets. The national government immediately committed to look for and provide a budget to supply the city with sufficient dogs and handlers, he said.

Roxas and the police refused to divulge the name of the group and individuals behind the threat despite their pronouncements that the intelligence reports they had gathered were highly reliable.

“I will not go into the details of these intelligence report,” Roxas said, explaining that he didn’t want to provide any information that would help the threat group.

Roxas said the national government is not trying to cause alarm among the residents but it is only trying to preempt any security issues. – Rappler.com
