New batch of PH peacekeepers off to Haiti

Filipino troops will provide VIP security, administrative and logistical services, among other things, at the UN force HQ in the strife-torn Carribean country

MANILA, Philippines – An all-Navy group of 157 Filipino peacekeepers left for Haiti on Monday, September 22, to replace the troops scheduled to come home later this week.

“The 157–strong contingent composed of 12 officers and 145 enlisted personnel will be led by Commander Aldrin Doctor,” said Philippine military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala.

They will provide VIP security, administrative and logistical services, and conduct perimeter security for the Force Headquarters of the UN Mission in the Carribean country.

The decades-old political unrest in Haiti has worsened since an earthquake struck the country, killing hundreds of thousands and causing more damage to local economy and infrastructure.

The Philippine military has been sending peacekeepers to Haiti since 2004. The new batch makes up the 18th Philippine Contingent to Haiti.

“The AFP will continue to support the government in its commitment to peacekeeping missions of the United Nations. As a force provider, it is an honor to train, equip, and deploy members of the military to represent the country to these peacekeeping missions,” said Zagala.

The outgoing contigent is led by Navy Captain Luzviminda Camacho, the first female contingent commander to be sent to Haiti. – Rappler.com
