Troops from Ebola-hit Liberia to stay on ‘Island Paradise’
The change of locations comes after the local government of Capas, Tarlac, protested the selection of their town as the place for the quarantine procedure

MANILA, Philippines – Oops! Change of plans.

The 110 Filipino peacekeepers coming home from Ebola-hit Liberia will not be quarantined in Camp O’Donnel in Capas, Tarlac, as originally planned.

The military said the all-Air Force team will be quarantined instead in an undisclosed “paradise island” in Luzon.

“The chief of staff has decided to put them in a secluded place. It is an island paradise, but I could disclose the exact location as of now. We’re planning a media tour so you can see,” said military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Harold Cabunoc.

The local government of Capas protested the selection of their town as the place for the quarantine procedure.

The troops are arriving next week, on November 11.

The quarantine period will take 3 weeks. The soldiers have to pass medical tests before the military can give them a welcome party and be allowed to see their families.

Representatives from the Department of Health will supervise the 3-week quarantine procedure.

The Philippine military has been sending peacekeepers to various United Nations missions, including in Liberia, the Golan Heights, and Haiti. The Philippines has decided to pull out troops from Liberia because of the Ebola outbreak, and from Golan because of the escalating Syrian conflict. – Carmela Fonbuena/Rappler.com
