273 new HIV/AIDS cases were reported in May

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded a total of 9,669 cases of HIV/AIDS in the country since 1984. It noted a continuing rise in the number, especially among males.

A total of 1,042 cases have progressed into AIDS. Sixty-two of those afflicted with HIV are children below 15 years old. A total of 352 of the recorded HIV/AIDS victims have died.

The DOH said 12 new cases were reported in May alone. Two deaths were also reported; both were males aged 27 and 42 years old.

“There is a significant difference in the number of male and female cases reported.  Eighty-four percent (8,133) were males. Ages ranged from one to 81 years (median: 29 years). The age group with the most number of cases were 20-24 years (21 percent); 25-29 years (28 percent) and 30-34 (19 percent),” the DOH report said.

“From 2007, there has been a shift in the predominant trend of sexual transmission from heterosexual contact (21%) to males having sex with other males (79%),” the report added

In May alone, 273 new HIV cases were recorded. An overwhelming majority got HIV/AIDS through sexual contact (268 cases), needle sharing among injecting drug users (4 cases), and mother–to-child transmission (1 case).

“Males having sex with other males (87%) were the predominant type of sexual transmission,” the report added.

The new cases in May 2012 were 38% higher than the 184 cases reported in the same month last year, based on records of the Philippine HIV and AIDS Registry, an agency under DOH.

An overwhelming majority of the new cases, 96%, are males around 20-29 years old. Half of the cases are reported from the National Capital Region, 51%. Twenty-five of them are overseas Filipino workers. – Rappler.com
