Expect heaviest traffic on December 19 – MMDA
Expect heavy traffic on December 19 – the last Friday before Christmas – as more people do their last-minute shopping

MANILA, Philippines – Expect the worst of Metro Manila holiday traffic on Friday, December 19, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned.

Since more people doing their last-minute shopping on the last Friday before Christmas Day, the MMDA is asking commuters for extra patience as the traffic situation is expected to hit its peak.

Traffic flow is expected to be heavy in areas around major shopping malls and commercial establishments, as well as along the main thoroughfare, EDSA.

The MMDA said an additional 400 traffic enforcers will be deployed in key areas to help ease traffic congestion.

Traffic volume along major roads during the holiday season increases by 15% to 20%, the MMDA added.

To help ease road congestion, operators of shopping malls earlier agreed to implement staggered operating hours for the holiday season.

Until January 3, 2015, shopping malls will have new operating hours of 11 am to 11 pm.

A different schedule will be followed on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, as well as on Christmas and New Year’s Day. On December 24 and 31, malls will be open from 12 noon to 7 pm. On December 25 and January 1, mall hours willl be from 12 noon to 8 pm. – Rappler.com
