Nemenzo, who is suffering from bacterial meningitis, is still at the ICU of the Philippine General Hospital

MANILA, Philippines – It’s the 8th day since former University of the Philippines (UP) president Francisco Nemenzo was hospitalized at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila for bacterial meningitis.

Nemenzo has been at the PGH Central ICU since December 29 after he fell ill due to bacterial meningitis, a usually severe but rare infection which can cause serious complications as it affects the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

“This caused him to have high fever and seizures, and to lapse into stupor,” UP College of Medicine Dean Agnes Mejia said on Monday, January 5.

Nemenzo is under the care of Mejia and a team of doctors who are giving him “antibiotics, insulin, intravenous fluids, anti-convulsants and other supportive treatment including tube feeding and ventilator support.”

The next days and weeks are crucial, Mejia said, as the former UP president “remains critical and guarded.”

“As he is a diabetic and elderly, his immune system is weakened; thus, all appropriate interventions to help him fight the infection are being applied,” she added.

The hospital will only allow Nemenzo’s immediate family to visit.

Nemenzo served as the 18th president of the premier state university from 1999 to 2005. Before that, he was chancellor of UP Visayas, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UP Diliman, and a faculty regent.

Under his leadership, the university’s Revitalized General Education Program (RGEP) was established, allowing students to choose their general education courses.

Nemenzo is currently professor emeritus of UP Diliman. – Rappler.com
