MANILA, Philippines – One Abu Sayyaf Group member and 7 other inmates escaped from the Basilan Provincial Jail, the police discovered early morning on Tuesday, January 27.

“During the accounting of inmates by the duty provincial jail guard at around 8 a.m., they found out that 8 of the inmates are missing,” according to the police report. 

Among the inmates was an alleged Abu Sayyaf member identified as Said Usman. He and the other occupants of Cell No. 2 climbed through the ceiling and jumped to the concrete fence, the report added.

A follow-up operation is now ongoing, according to the police. The other inmates who escaped were identified as:
