COTABATO CITY, Philippines – The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) gave assurances on Thursday, March 5, that it will provide the Department of Justice (DOJ) its own investigation report on the Mamasapano clash.
MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal however said only an executive summary will be submitted to the DOJ.
He said that if the families of the slain 44 policemen were seeking justice, the MIF, too, wants the same for their 18 fighters, particularly 4 of them who were allegedly killed inside a mosque, and 5 slain civilians (Editor’s note: Official regional government data show 3 civilians slain).
Iqbal said they received Justice Secretary Leila de Lima’s letter pertaining to the department’s request for a copy of the MILF investigation report. The MILF is finished with its investigation, he added.
“Our report is internal to us. What we will give to the government, including the DOJ, is the executive summary,” Iqbal said.
Iqbal said they will give their executive summary to Malaysia, the facilitator in their peace talks with the government. The Malaysian facilitators will in turn forward the summary to the government peace panel members, he added.
De Lima earlier said her team is conducting an independent probe into the incident and will not exempt the police Special Action Force from it. – Jeoffrey Maitem/Rappler.com
