Political bigwigs to gather for Cebu congressman’s wedding
Who cares about party lines? On March 7, Cebu 6th District Representative Luigi Quisumbing marries Maricar Hofileña, the teenage crush whom he only saw again after 20 years

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The couple would have wanted to keep political talk out of their wedding on Saturday, March 7, but it would be difficult to do that if the groom is Cebu 6th District Representative Gabriel Luis “Luigi” Quisumbing and the bride is prominent Negros Occidental businesswoman Maria Carmen Carmela “Maricar” Hofileña.

The good thing, however, is that national and local political figures are expected to blur party lines at least for a day to honor the couple, who are their personal friends.

“We wanted to keep politics out of the wedding as much as possible. Yes, there are politicians that are part of our list of sponsors but more than being politicians, these are people we know and have come to respect,” Quisumbing told Rappler when asked how difficult it was to get opposite parties in their wedding.

“We are honored that those who have confirmed their attendance have chosen to share this special day with Maricar and I,” the congressman said.

Luigi, 35, will tie the knot with childhood friend Maricar, 35, whom he met again after 20 years of being apart. They “reconnected” during the wake of Quisumbing’s grandmother two years ago, and started dating since.

In a FB messaging interview with Rappler, Quisumbing said both their families are excited about the wedding.

He admitted that Maricar was his long-time crush: “I can’t wait. It’s funny that after this time and distance it turned out my first instincts about her were right…. I felt there was something special about her 20 years ago. It didn’t take too long to rediscover that when we met again.”

The congressman said: “I had every intention of pursuing her, but at the same time, I didn’t have the opportunity to since I was leaving for high school [in the United States]. But when we reconnected it was really like no time had passed.”

The couple will wed at 3 pm Saturday at the National Shrine of St Joseph in Mandaue City. What could be dubbed as Cebu’s wedding of the year, it will be officiated by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

Among the couple’s sponsors are Senate President Franklin Drilon, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr, Senator Grace Poe, Cabinet Secretary Rene Almendras, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, Securities and Exchange Commission Chairperson Teresita Herbosa, retired Court of Appeals Justice Hector Hofileña, Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, Consolacion Mayor Teresa Alegado, and Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy.

The high-profile guests include Cebu Governor Hilario Davide and his predecessor, former Governor Gwen Garcia, Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, Senator Teofisto Guingona III, siblings Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos, Cebu congressmen Rodrigo Abellanosa, Wilfredo Caminero, Ace Durano, and Benhur Salimbangon.

President Benigno Aquino III was invited, but “he had prior commitments,” said Quisumbing.

Quisumbing is the son of Luis Quisumbing and Betty Romualdez, and is the grandson of businessman Norberto Quisumbing Jr, founder of the Norkis Group of Companies based in Mandaue City. Maricar is from a respected family in Silay City in Negros Occidental, and is managing several family businesses in Manila.

After the church wedding, reception will be held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City’s North Reclamation Area. – Rappler.com
