Roxas on Binay challenge: ‘High school thinking’
Secretary Mar Roxas says the DILG serving the Ombudsman's suspension order on Mayor Binay is 'ordinary course of business, no need to have drama around it'

MANILA, Philippines – For Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II, the challenge for him to personally serve the suspension order against the mayor of Makati came from someone with a “high school” frame of thinking.

Nakikita ngayon ng sambayanan ang uri ng pag-iisip ng mga nagsa-suggest nitong mga ito, na parang…parang sa high school. Ang governance at pamamahala ay isang seryosong gawain,” he said.

(The public can now see that those who suggest this has a high school frame of mind. Governance is serious business.)

Earlier, the camp of Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr dared Roxas to personally implement the suspension order issued by the Ombudsman against him last Wednesday.

The mayor’s camp has assailed the suspension order, saying it was politically motivated and was meant to derail the 2016 presidential bid of his father, Vice President Jejomar Binay.

Roxas is perceived to be the elder Binay’s rival in the 2016 polls.

The Ombudsman has ordered the Deparment of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to enforce the suspension order against the Makati mayor.

The order stems from allegations of irregularities involving the awarding of a contract in the construction of an allegedly overpriced Makati city building.

Binay, however, has asked the Court of Appeals (CA) to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop the suspension order.

He has vowed not to leave the city hall until the court decides on his petition.

Asked about Binay’s suspension, the DILG secretary stressed that no one is above the law, and that the Ombudsman’s order is immediately executable.

Hindi ko gustong palakihin itong bagay na ito dahil ordinary course of business lang ito…. Hindi kinakailangang magkaroon ng ganitong drama na ito,” he said.

(I don’t want to blow this issue out of proportion because this is ordinary course of business…. There is no need to have drama around it.)

(The Ombudsman said that there is enough evidence to suspend Mayor Binay on corruption allegations. We at the DILG and PNP are just doing our jobs.)

The interior secretary also pointed out that the “drama” in Makati has inconvenienced thousands of people who were not able to carry out transactions inside the city hall’s offices.

Responding to Roxas’ remark, Binay said the comment was “uncalled for.”

“I would have expected some maturity on the part of Secretary Roxas. Let’s not resort to name-calling and nitpicking,” he said. – Rappler.com
