Online shoppers warned vs toxic beauty products
The EcoWaste Coalition warns consumers against beauty products with hazardous materials such as mercury, amphetamine, sibutramine and steroids, being sold online

MANILA, Philippines – Environmental watchdog EcoWaste Coalition warned consumers against buying cosmetics and slimming products with dangerous chemicals online.

The group said on Sunday, March 22, that it found several beauty and slimming products banned by health authorities on two major online shopping websites.

“We deplore the use of online retail sites to peddle unauthorized goods banned by the government for posing serious health risk to consumers. Online shoppers must be forewarned,” EcoWaste Coalition coordinator Thony Dizon said.

Dizon added, “We urge the management of these online retail sites to quickly remove advertisements for such dangerous products in light of the government-issued health directives and to impose sanctions that will bar the posting of such ads.”

EcoWaste Coalition said that it searched online retail websites Lazada and OLX and found skin whitening products containing mercury and slimming products with amphetamine, sibutramine and steroids on sale.

The group said mercury in skin whitening products may damage the skin, the brain and the central nervous system and the kidneys.

Meanwhile, amphetamine, sibutramine and steroids in slimming products may cause severe health reactions, including increased cardiovascular risks.

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has banned products containing these ingredients and has issued health advisories ordering inspectors to confiscate unauthorized goods.

EcoWaste Coalition said the following beauty products containing mercury have been found on lazada.com.ph and olx.ph:

  • On Lazada: Angel Placenta Whitening Cream and JJJ Magic Spots Removing Day and Night Cream
  • On OLX: Erna Whitening Cream, S’Zitang and several variants of banned BG, Jiaoli and St. Dalfour skin whitening products

The following banned slimming products were also found on sale on Lazada and OLX:

  • Brazilian Slimming Coffee
  • Leisure Burn Body Fat Orange Juice
  • Leisure 18 Slimming Coffee
  • Sehat Badan Powder

Meanwhile, EcoWaste Coalition said slimming products containing sibutramine and phenolphthalein, banned by Hong Kong’s health department, have been found on OLX:

  • Authentic Leisure 18 Slimming Orange Juice
  • Body Beauty 5 Days Slimming Coffee
  • Brazilian 7 Days Slimming Coffee
  • Coffee Fashion Slimming
  • Leisure 18 Slimming Mango Juice
  • Leisure 18 Slimming Orange Juice
  • Super Slim Orange Juice

As of Sunday, these products were still on sale on Lazada and OLX.

The EcoWaste Coalition called on law enforcement authorities to intervene and stop the sale of these products. – Rappler.com
