2 dead, 3 missing in drowning incidents during Holy Week
Most of the drowning incidents took place in Northern Luzon, the Philippine Coast Guard says

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) recorded various drowning incidents in Northern Luzon as families flock to beaches during the Holy Week break.

The PCG said on Monday, April 6, that two people died while 3 others remain missing as rescuers continued their operation.

According to the report, Aquilino Amistoso died in Alaminos City, Pangasinan, on Good Friday, April 3. The 54-year-old “lost consciousness and drowned” when another person “jumped on the same hole” where he was diving at Marcos Island, a part of the famous Hundred Islands.

The heavy impact of the diver’s fall broke Amistoso’s neck. He was pronounced dead on arrival in the nearby hospital, the report said.

Meanwhile, rescuers were able to retrieve the body of 17-year-old Joseph Mabbagu Jr on Black Saturday, April 4, after he and his companion, Ralph Lesever Domingo, drowned while out at sea in Aparri, Cagayan.

Police investigator Florentino Usita said the sea current and waves were “significantly strong” despite the good weather that day.

On the same day, PCG personnel was only able to rescue Jefferson Abillano alive in Barangay Matawe of Dingalan, Aurora. His companion, Franco Meradona, remains missing.

Matawe chairperson Mercedita Escubido said the victims were “dragged by a strong current” almost two nautical miles from the shore.

“Both swimmers were wearing a life ring, but one of them was under the influence of alcohol,” she said.

The PCG said that they are coordinating with proper local authorities and rescue teams to recover the bodies of the missing people.

Swimming guidelines

Following the number of fatal drowning accidents this summer, the Coast Guard issued a 10-point guideline that people must observe during their trips to any body of water.

According to the PCG, adults should ensure the safety of their children by keeping an eye on them while they are swimming. They should also be updated on the last weather updates.

The agency reminded resort owners to assign duly licensed lifeguards in their establishments to ensure their safety compliance.

“Follow the regulations and reminders of the lifeguards,” PCG said. – with a report from Raymon Dullana/Rappler.com
