(4th UPDATE) Tropical depression Ferdie continues to bring heavy rains over Luzon, flooding several areas and prompting schools to cancel classes

MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) – The state weather bureau on Saturday afternoon, July 21, lifted all rainfall warning signals due to tropical depression Ferdie.

Earlier Saturday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) raised the red warning signal over 12 areas because of the high amount of rainfall. The affected areas included Marikina, Quezon City, Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasay, Pasig, Parañaque, Taguig, Malabon, Navotas, and Caloocan.

“However, Metro Manila (can) still expect occasional moderate to heavy rains. People are still advised to monitor the weather condition and watch out for the next updates,” Pagasa said in its 1:45 p.m. update.

Pagasa uses a color-coded warning system to help local governments and their communities to prepare for floods, landslides, and dam spills.

Yellow means there is rainfall of 7.5 to 15 millimeters within an hour, while green means rainfall is between 15 mm and 30 mm and flooding is a definite threat.

A red alert is raised when heavy rains constitute emergency. Rainfall under this warning exceeds 30 mm within an hour and has been this way for 3 hours or so.

Rappler has compiled flood alerts not only from Pagasa, but also the Metro Manila Development Authority. (See below)

Meantime, some schools, colleges and universities in Metro Manila have suspended their classes.
