RH advocate Carlos Celdran: From ‘Damaso’ to ‘Basura Bunny’
The reproductive health advocate puts on bunny ears to draw attention to the problem of littering

MANILA, Philippines – Reproductive health advocate Carlos Celdran has taken off his trademark bowler hat and put on pink bunny ears for his latest mission – fighting, and shaming, litterbugs.

In a post on his Facebook page on Thursday, April 9, Celdran introduced “Basura Bunny” or his litter-picking self in a pink bunny ear headband.

He said he spent the previous afternoon picking up trash in Camp John Hay in Baguio City, and urged other people to wear funny outfits and pick up garbage in full public view to draw attention to the problem.

Celdran said he was particularly vexed at the sight of wrappers of expensive chocolate scattered on the ground as anyone who can afford to buy them should know how to dispose of trash.

Celdran drummed up protest against the Catholic Church’s opposition to the Reproductive Health law when he held a “Damaso” sign inside the Manila Cathedral in the middle of a Mass.

“Damaso” refers to Padre Damaso, the villain in Jose Rizal’s El Filibusterismo who was seen meddling in government affairs.

In 2013, a Manila court convicted Celdran of offending religious feelings under Article 133 of the Revised Penal Code.

The Court of Appeals affirmed the decision in January 2015, prompting Celdran to seek the help of Pope Francis, who was visiting the Philippines that month. – Rappler.com
