Aquino backs Negros Island Region, EO due ‘in weeks’
President Benigno Aquino III says leaders of the Negros provinces have assured him that all contentious issues have been addressed

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III announced on Thursday, April 30, that he is supporting the proposed Negros Island Region.

Aquino, who was in Negros Occidental to inaugurate a rice mill facility and an IT complex, made the announcement after a closed door meeting with Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr and Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo.

“[They] assured me that all contentious issues have already been dealt with,” Aquino said in a news conference.

He said he expects the governors to “present a draft of the proposed implementing rules and regulations, which will be incorporated in the executive order to make this a reality.”

“As soon as I receive that, I will sign an executive order creating one Negros region,” Aquino said.

Asked if he will issue the executive order before the year ends, Aquino said, “Depending when they will submit it, we’re talking about weeks not months.”

The President said that it is logical to create a new region because the two Negros provinces belong to one island. (READ: FAST FACTS: The proposed Negros Island Region)
