NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines – The onslaught of Typhoon Egay left more than P13 million (US$290,00*) worth of damage to agriculture and fisheries in the province.

The Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) reported a total of P12,485,722 damage to crops and P850,000 to fisheries in 17 cities and towns due to heavy rains and flash floods.

OPA data shows the typhoon battered crops like rice (P9,990,272), banana (P1,622,620), corn (P850,250), and vegetables (P22,680).

Fishing boats and equipment were also damaged in the affected localities.

Bago City suffered the wortst, recording P5,344,000 worth of damage to crops. It is followed by Valladolid town (P2,756,560), Don Salvador Benedicto (P1,270,500), San Enrique (P902,024), and Sipalay City (P612,300).

Valladolid also reported P680,000 worth of damage to fishing gears, which affected 32 fishermen. Sipalay City reported P135,000 worth of damage to fishing boats.

The province is on heightened alert as the country braces for the coming Typhoon Falcon.

Zeaphard Caelian, chief of the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division, said all local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council were directed to monitor the flood-prone areas in their localities.
