DAVAO CITY, Philippines - Sara Duterte-Carpio is not running for re-election to give way to her father, the incumbent Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Her brother Paolo will be running for vice mayor unopposed. The Duterte patriarch, on the other hand, will be running for mayor against little-known candidates, because the local opposition is not fielding its own bet against him.
“I will give way to Vice Mayor Rody Duterte who will run again for mayor,” Sara Duterte said in a text message sent to local reporters here last Friday, October 5.
The lady mayor said that she plans to work in a law firm after her term. She is eligible for two more terms.
Sara’s brother, Paolo Duterte, who is city councilor and president of the Association of Barangay Captains, said that his sister's delicate pregnancy could be the main reason why she decided not to run again.
Councilor Melchor Quitain, a party mate of the Dutertes under the Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, filed the certificate of candidacy of the Duterte patriarch on Friday afternoon. (Check out the rest of the local lineup here.)
The first female mayor of this city, Sara Duterte worked as a court attorney at the Supreme court. She won her first electoral bid as vice mayor for Davao in 2007 and in 2010 defeated former House Speaker Prospero “Boy” Nograles in the mayoral race.
Father, son tandem
Rodrigo Duterte, who was mayor of this city from 1988 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2010, has earned a reputation as a strongman. His hardline tactics against criminals generate both public support and criticism, and earned him the nickname "The Punisher."
He served as representative of Davao’s 1st District from 1998 to 2001. In 2001, he ran again for mayor and served for 3 more terms until 2010, when he ran for vice mayor and let his daughter seek the higher post.
Sara Duterte has not been without controversy. In July 2011, she punched a sheriff who disobeyed her order to halt a planned demolition of a shanty community in the city.
In a rare interview in April 2012, Sara Duterte spoke about her regret over that incident.
She talked about infamy, regret, and the father she hardly knows.
Sara Duterte, who stayed with her mother after Rody Duterte broke from his wife, admitted she is in constant disagreement with her father. She said being female and young has often stood in her way in the performance of her duties.
