[Q and A] Chiz has questions for church
MANILA, Philippines - Re-electionist senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero joined the 2013 Senatorial Candidates Forum on Health organized by the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) on Monday, March 4. Candidates were asked to explain their health agenda and entertain questions from health advocates and reporters.
Question: How will you counter the campaign of the Catholic Church against lawmakers like you who voted in favor of the Reproductive Health (RH) law?
Answer: I have several things on that. Una bilang mamamayan, may karapatan ang mga pari or arsobispo mangampanya pabor or kontra sa particular na kandidato bilang mamamayan at bilang Pilipino. Sana hindi bilang pari, hindi suot ang sutana at hindi ginagamit ang pulpito. (As Filipino citizens, priests and archbishops have the right to campaign in favor or against a particular candidate. But I hope they don't do it as priests wearing their robes and making speeches in the pulpit.)
Pangalawa ang katanungan ko siguro doon ay simple, paano kung bumoto laban sa RH bill pero magnanakaw naman ang kandidato? Dapat ba iboto natin yun? Paano kapag bumoto pabor sa RH bill pero tapat, mahal ang bayan at hindi nagnanakaw? (Second, I have a simple question. What if a lawmaker voted against the RH bill but he or she is a thief? Should we vote for him or her? What if a candidate voted in favor of the RH bill but he or she is honest, loves the country, and is not a thief?)
Dahil lang ba sa paglabag sa isang kautusan ng Diyos bagamat sinusunod mo ang siyam, hindi ka na dapat iboto or dapat ka nang iboto? (Should voters not vote for a candidate just because he/she violated one of God's commandments yet followed the other 9?)
Siguro naman may mas malawak na basehan ang pagboto at pagsuporta sa kandidatong tumatakbo at hindi ang iisang boto para sa particular na bill or batas. (I think there should be a more comprehensive basis that voters should consider before they vote for a candidate. It should not be based on a candidate's vote on a single measure.) - Rappler.com
