MANILA, Philippines – The New People’s Army (NPA) rebels operating in the Bicol region launched a series of assaults against government forces transporting ballot-counting machines.

The NPA earlier admitted that they are behind the ambush of a special weapon and tactics (SWAT) team transporting precinct count optical system (PCOS) machines in Bacon, Sorsogon on Friday, May 10.

In Masbate province, the NPA’s Jose Rapsing Command also attacked the soldiers under the 80th Infanty Battalion at Miala village in Uson town on May 9.

The Philippine Army deployed another 800 soldiers to assist government forces assigned in Masbate due to these attacks against army augmentation troops.

“The 800 soldiers will fill-in the gaps in Masbate for election security operation requirements,” said Army Major Angelo Guzman, the military’s regional spokesman of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division. – with reports from Rhaydz Barcia/Rappler.com
