MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Cavite's re-electionist Governor Juanito Victor "Jonvic" Remulla of Magdalo-Lakas was leading his lone challenger, former governor Erineo "Ayong" Maliksi, by 50,694 votes, as of 9:25 am on Tuesday, May 14.
The latest unofficial results showed Remulla of Magdalo-Lakas pulling away with 400,814 votes, against the 350,814 of Maliksi of the Liberal Party (LP). Initial vote updates after the polls closed showed the incumbent with a lead of only a few thousands.
Cavite is a huge industrial province with 1.79 million registered voters, the second highest among provinces.
Remulla's running mate, ex-officio provincial board member Ramon "Jolo" Revilla III of Lakas, is ahead by 162,334 votes over his closest rival Ronald Jay Lacson of the LP.
Jolo, the son of senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr and congresswoman Lani Mercado, has so far garnered 392,194 votes, against the 229,860 of Lacson, son of senator Panfilo Lacson.
Trailing in the race is the re-electionist vice governor, Recto Cantimbuhan, with 96,040 votes so far. Cantimbuhan ran as an independent after Maliksi and the local LP reportedly took back their promise to field him for re-election.
Remulla's brothers are not doing as well as he in their respective races.
Congressman Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla of the Nationalista Party (NP), who is running for mayor of Tagaytay City, so far has 12,520 votes against the 16,711 of political neophyte Agnes Tolentino of the LP, wife of outgoing mayor Bambol Tolentino.
Former 2nd district congressman Gilbert Remulla, who is running to replace Boying in the 7th district, is behind Bambol Tolentino. Gilbert so far has 65,837 votes, against Bambol's 78,852.
