MANILA, Philippines – If Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is elected president, he better take gender sensitivity and anger management training, according to Liberal Party vice presidential candidate Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo.

“Baka bigyan ko muna siya ng gender sensitivity training at anger management training. Human rights lawyer ako (Maybe I’d give him gender gender sensitivity training and anger management training. I’m a human rights lawyer),” Robredo said on Wednesday, December 16, when asked what would happen to women’s rights in the event that she is elected vice president and Duterte, president.

The Davao mayor is infamous for his tough-talking ways, alleged links to summary killings in his city, and his unapologetic candor when it comes to the women in his life. Duterte says he has a wife and at least two girlfriends at the same time.

Duterte is also known for kissing and flirting with women in his public events across the country.

Robredo, the widow of the late interior secretary Jesse Robredo, added: “Baka pag nangyari iyon kailanganin niya muna ‘yun. At iyong anger management ‘pag tayo hindi natin alam kung pano idideal ang ating galit at dinadaan iyon sa karahasan, napakadelikado noon para sa ating lipunan.” (Maybe if he wins, he’ll need that training first. Because if we don’t know how to deal with our anger and express it through violence, it’s dangerous for society.)

Duterte has long been linked to the so-called “Davao Death Squad,” a loose group of vigilantes in the city. Although he has denied being responsible for the group, Duterte is not shy about his approach to solving criminality.

“When I said I’ll stop criminality, I’ll stop criminality… If I have to kill you, I’ll kill you. Personally,” the mayor said in an interview with Rappler.

Robredo was at the launch of the Woman For Leni Movement, where she spoke at length about women’s rights and empowerment.

The neophyte legislator said “women empowerment, hunger and poverty, and rural development” would be her top priorities should she be elected vice president.

Asked to comment on Duterte’s womanizing ways, Robredo said she was saddened by it. (READ: Rodrigo Duterte: Yes, I’m a womanizer)

“Nakakalungkot iyon para sa ating mga kababaihan dahil parang niyuyurakan ang ating dignidad. Iyong hindi kinakahiya iyong mga violations laban sa mga kababaihan parang nakakatakot iyon para sa isang leader,” she said. (It’s sad for women because our dignity is degraded. It’s worrisome when a leader isn’t even ashamed of his violations against women.)

She added: “Pero kasi iyong leader dapat ikaw ang modelo ng lahat, ikaw ang dapat nagbibigay ng direction kung paano i-treat ang iyong constituents, ang ating kapwa. (A leader should be the model for everyone. You should give the direction with how you treat your constituents.)
