Poe supporters slam Escudero as ‘Boy Laglag’
(UPDATED) 'Chiz' becomes a Twitter trending topic because of a rally staged by Poe's supporters outside the Supreme Court

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Supporters of Senator Grace Poe staged a rally in front of the Supreme Court (SC) on Monday, December 28, as the presidential aspirant ran to the high court to save her candidacy.

While showing support for Poe, many of her sympathizers also carried posters against her running mate, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

One of these posters tagged Escudero as “Boy Laglag” (Fair-Weather Ally).

Escudero is a long-time ally of Poe’s family. In 2004, he served as the spokesman of Poe’s father, the late action star Fernando Poe Jr or FPJ, when the actor ran for president. (READ: 11 things to know about Chiz Escudero

Because of Escudero’s role in FPJ’s campaign, Senator Poe has stood by Escudero even if his critics claim he is a liability

Poe’s supporters said Escudero, however, is set to abandon Poe after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) barred her from running over citizenship and residency issues.

In a play on the Filipino word “ahas (snake)” and the vice presidential aspirant’s surname, another poster outside the SC said: “Ahas-cudero. ‘Wag pagkatiwalaan (Do not trust him).”

Photos of these posters went viral on Twitter, and made “Chiz” the 8th top trending topic of Twitter in the Philippines.

This comes as Poe filed two petitions before the SC on Monday to stop the Comelec from cancelling her certificate of candidacy.

‘Barefaced lie’

Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian, Poe’s campaign spokesman, dismissed the allegations as “black propaganda.”

“The recent story being circulated that Sen. Chiz has abandoned Sen. Grace is baseless and a barefaced lie. If the people behind this story plan to drive a wedge between the two candidates, they should stop wasting their time as the two candidates continue to fight this battle together, side-by-side,” Gatchalian said.

“Their relationship as running mates remain grounded on common advocacies for the people. These people should focus on promoting their advocacies rather than dwelling on black prop,” he added.

Gatchalian said the tandem “remains strong.” He also expressed “disgust” at how “certain groups continue to destroy our candidates – first individually and now as a tandem.”

“These people started their attacks on Senator Poe and now have launched an offensive aimed at sowing intrigue between the Poe-Escudero tandem,” he said. – Katerina Francisco/Rappler.com
