More fireworks in 2nd presidential debate despite delay
The presidential candidates are on attack mode during the whole debate

Compared to the first presidential debate held in Cagayan de Oro City, the second one in Cebu City was more “dramatic” and action-packed.

Aside from the 90-minute delay that irked viewers, members of the media and a staff member of TV5 figured in a heated commotion inside the media center.

Patty Pasion reports.

LUCHI CRUZ-VALDES, NEWS5 CHIEF: The Comelec rules had initially stated at the outset that there should be no notes or documents to be brought at the debate. This is a standing rule that is not communicated to me.

Ngunit paglilinaw ng kampo ni Binay….

JUNJUN BINAY, FORMER MAKATI MAYOR: Yung mga notes kasi di naman notes, these are documents to prove the point of the vice president that he is innocent of any accusations.

TRANSLATION

The second presidential debates held at the University of the Philippines in Cebu this Sunday morning has been filled with action.

For over an hour, The debate was delayed because administration standard-bearer Mar Roxas questioned the notes Vice President Jejomar Binay brought. Something TV5 News and Public Affairs chief Luchi Cruz Valdes approved of.

But Binay’s camp clarified

JUNJUN BINAY, FORMER MAKATI MAYOR: Those notes weren’t really notes, these are documents to prove the point of the vice president that he is innocent of any accusations.

The exchange among candidates has also been fiery with each one throwing controversial remarks to their contenders.

Binay and Senator Grace Poe faced off in the issue of corruption and citizenship while Roxas and Rodrigo Duterte exchanged words on fighting crime and drugs.

The debate also heated up much more when each candidate was given a chance to ask his fellow candidate a question.

Meanwhile, right before the debate started, a commotion among media men also occurred when a TV5 staff prohibited members of the media to go in and out of the media center.

Despite the many mishaps, Comelec Chairman Andres Bautista believes the debate was a success.

ANDRES BAUTISTA, COMELEC CHAIRMAN: This debate, based on my opinion, has been successful. Although we need to study what were the good portions. In other words, these are lessons learned.

As election day comes closer, each candidate becomes more aggressive with their remarks on other candidates. One thing is clear, in a debate like this, the public is able to scrutinize and choose who they feel is the rightful heir to the presidency.
