The Catholic lay group singles out two of its members running for national positions in the May 9 polls: vice presidential bet Leni Robredo and senatorial candidate Dante Liban

MANILA, Philippines – Catholic lay group Couples for Christ (CFC) has thrown its support behind Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo, who is running for vice president in the May 9 polls.

In a letter dated May 2 and addressed to the group’s mission leaders, CFC president George Campos singled out two of its members who are currently seeking public office in next week’s elections.

“While, as a matter of policy, CFC is not endorsing any candidate, we would however like to point out that there are several of our brethren who are seeking public office,” the letter read.

“Two of our CFC brethren are seeking national positions – Leni Robredo who is running for vice president and Dante Liban who is running for senator,” the letter continued.

Campos noted that Robredo and her late husband, former interior chief Jesse Robredo, were active CFC members in Bicol.

Liban, a former Quezon City representative, is an active member in the group’s Metro Manila North B sector.

“We encourage everyone to seek out these candidates in your respective areas, if this is possible, and engage them in dialogue in order to determine the programs they commit to push. Let us study each and every candidate’s qualifications for public office and their programs and measure them against the Christian values we hold dear,” Campos said.

In a Facebook post, Robredo shared the CFC letter with the caption, “Thank you, Couples for Christ, for the endorsement.” – Rappler.com
