MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Jejomar Binay closed his campaign for the presidency in Makati, the city where he was mayor for 21 years.

During his miting de avance on Saturday, May 7, the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) standard-bearer promised thousands of his supporters that he will fight for his candidacy until the end. (READ: Binay: Quitting is not in my vocabulary)

He called his devoted followers the “true” silent majority, the name that the supporters of Binay’s rival, Liberal Party standard-bearer Manuel Roxas II, call themselves.

The Saturday night event in Makati also served as the miting de avance of the Vice President’s daughter, Makati Second District Representative Abigail “Abby” Binay-Campos.

“Magtiwala kayo, sa araw ng eleksyon, magtatagumpay tayo! Mananalo ako bilang pangulo ng Pilipinas!” said the elder Binay.

(Trust me, on election day, we will succeed! I will win as president of the Philippines!)

The miting de avance was also attended by Binay’s running mate Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan II and the following UNA senatorial candidates: Sulu Princess Jacel Kiram, broadaster Rey Langit, labor lawyer Allan Montaño, Parañaque Councilor Alma Moreno, former Special Action Force commander Getulio Napeñas, and Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao.

Abby Binay’s local slate in Makati attended as well, including vice mayoral candidate and incumbent First District Representative Monique Lagdameo, Abby’s husband Luis Campos, who is running for Congress in the Second District, and Councilor Monsour del Rosario, who is seeking to be representative of the First District.

The Binay camp estimated the crowd at 60,000, though the Makati police placed the number at around 12,000 only.
