'We thought the media was not interested anymore,' JBC member Jose Mejia says

LIVE AGAIN. The JBC allows the media to air the public interviews live.

MANILA, Philippines – The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) decided on Monday, October 22 to allow again the media to broadcast live the public interviews with contenders to the post of Supreme Court associate justice. The interviews will be conducted for two days, October 23 and 25.

The JBC initially barred the media from airing the public interviews, but JBC member Jose Mejia said this was due to a “misunderstanding.”

“We thought the media was not interested anymore,” he said, adding no one filed a request to broadcast it live. He said it was Supreme Court Appointments Watch convenor Vincent Lazatin who had asked the JBC to allow again its live airing.

Rappler also filed a request on October 21 to livestream the public interviews with the candidates for the 15th seat in the High Court; the council granted Rappler’s request.

The vacancy came about following the appointment of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno in August.

The JBC first approved the live coverage of public interviews in July following heightened public interest in those who were then vying for the post of chief justice. Renato Corona was sacked as chief justice in May. He was removed from the post by the Senate impeachment court for failing to disclose P180 million in peso and dollar bank deposits in his statement of assets, liabilities and networth.

Mejia said that the same guidelines adopted in July will apply this time around.

To be interviewed on Tuesday, October 23 at 1 pm are: Court of Appeals Justices Ramon Bato and Rosmari Carandang, former University of Perpetual Help law Dean Jose Santos Bisquera and Sandiganbayan Justice Maria Cristina Cornejo.

Judge Adoracion Cruz-Avisado; CA Justices Magdangal De Leon, Isaias Dicdican, Jose Reyes, Noel Tijam; CA Presiding Justice Andres Reyes; former University of the Philippines Law Dean Marvic Leonen; and former Energy Secretary Raphael Perpetuo Lotilla wil be interviewed on October 25 from 9 am-5 pm. – Rappler.com.
