MILF’s Iqbal attends SONA
The President is expected to tackle the Bangsamoro draft law during his SONA

MANILA, Philippines – It appears both sides have not given up on the difficult process of crafting a draft law for the creation of the Bangsamoro region. The head of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) peace panel is at the Batasan Pambansa to listen to the State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Aquino III.

Mohagher Iqbal, who also heads the Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) that drafted a proposed bill for the creation of the Bangsamoro region, arrived at the Batasan Pambansa complex at around 3:30 pm Monday, July 28, half an hour before the scheduled SONA of the President.

The President is expected to discuss the status of the Bangsamoro Basic Law during his SONA. Earlier, Iqbal expressed disappointment over Malacañang’s introduction of certain amendments to the draft law that the commissioned submitted.

Aquino appealed to the BTC to keep an open mind to ensure that the law is passed before the end of the year. In his SONA in 2013, the President expressed the hope that Congress would approve a new Bangsamoro law in 2014. – with reports from Angela Casauay and Karlos Manlupig/Rappler.com
