The US government pledges to donate US$100,000 to the Philippines to support disaster relief efforts

MANILA, Philippines – The United States on Tuesday, August 7, pledged to donate US$100,000 to the Philippines to support disaster relief efforts in Metro Manila following severe flooding brought about by non-stop rain, according to state-owned Philippine News Agency (PNA).

Based on current exchange rates, the pledge is equivalent to P4.3 million.

“On behalf of the U.S. government and the American people, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to those who are displaced and who have lost homes and livelihoods due to the floods,” US Ambassador Harry Thomas, Jr said in a statement.

The US government will also conduct an initial damage assessment in Metro Manila and nearby provinces to determine the extent of damage and determine immediate needs in affected areas. PNA said  it will be conducted by United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“As a good friend and longstanding development partner, the United States will work with the Philippine government to determine where our assistance is most needed. We remain committed to helping the Philippine people overcome this difficult time, said Thomas.

Nine areas in Luzon have been placed under state of calamity because of severe flooding: Laguna, Cainta and San Mateo cities in Rizal in Calabarzon; Malabon City, Muntinlupa City, and Valenzuela City in Metro Manila; Bataan, Pampanga, and Zambales in Central Luzon.

Rescue and rehabilitation efforts are expected to resume Wednesday. But the weather bureau Pagasa said it expects rain to continue throughout the day.

The Philippine government had released almost P13 million in relief aid to flooded areas across 11 regions. A total of 541,498 persons and 123,484 families have been affected by the bad weather, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in its August 7 bulletin. – Rappler.com
